Chagai: A Drought Prone District

Located on the border of Iran and Afghanistan, Chagai district of Balochistan is prone to droughts.
Drought originates from a deficiency of precipitation over an extended period of time, usually a season or more. This deficiency results in a water shortage for some livelihood activity to a community group, or environmental sector.
Local Farmers of Dalbandin told Balochistan Voices that Balochistan has a history of droughts but the last drought, from 1997 to 2002, was the longest dry spell in many years.

Balochistan is an arid region with occasional rainfall. A Prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall leads to a shortage of water.
Local Farmers lamented that most areas of district Chagai are severely affected by drought at many occasion. Due to scarcity of water many animals have died. Crops of the farmers have died down due to water shortage and it has resulted in severe loss.
Terrible Situation of drought has badly affected the lives of people and animals. Most people are dependent upon agricultural for their livelihood in District Chagai. People have been compelled to migrate from their homes due to water scarcity.
Water Table has fallen to 15 to 20 meters. As a result People are compelled to use tube wells to fulfill the water demand to maintain their farms.
It is really very sad to say that in such a modern era the people of Chagai are facing lot of trouble from terrible drought.
District Council Member Dil Murad Hassani believes that Long term Drought and water shortage has destroyed farms and resulted in deaths of animals. He claims that thousands of livestock have died due to Drought.
He further added visit of Commissioner Quetta Division Kamber Dashti and other senior members to district Chagai is a good initiative towards providing relief to drought affected people of Chagai.
Mr. Hassani urged livestock department to help the drought affected people by providing them with seeds and fodders for the livestock.
